Navigating the Waves of Change: AI Impact on the Graphic and Creative Industry in the Middle East

December 18, 2023

Residing in Dubai since 2007, I am an active participant in the graphic and creative industry of the Middle East. The industry encounters a new technological or medium shift approximately every five years, demanding professionals to adapt and evolve continually. Although navigating these changes has become customary, the unexpected rise of AI in the last year (2022), featuring innovations such as ChatGPT, OpenAI, and Midjourney, has introduced a new level of uncertainty for many industry professionals regarding the trajectory of their skills and careers.

Embracing Diversity in the Face of AI Impact

In the vibrant tapestry of the Middle East’s cosmopolitan landscape, expatriates from diverse backgrounds contribute to a rich and dynamic workforce. The responses to the impact of AI within this multicultural environment showcase a spectrum of reactions, ranging from the uninformed to the overly confident. Each individual’s stance serves as a reflection of their unique comprehension and adaptability in the face of technological change.

This diversity is especially striking when contrasted with cities where approximately 90% of the population originates from their own country, fostering a more homogenous culture. In these locales, reactions to AI do vary, but they may not exhibit the same breadth as those in cosmopolitan cities. The presence of individuals from around the world in cosmopolitan settings introduces native customs and perspectives, leading to significant disparities in responses. This interplay of diverse viewpoints adds complexity to how people in the Middle East perceive and react to the transformative impact of AI on their professional landscape.

Automation Enthusiasts

In the graphic and creative realm, Automation Enthusiasts embrace AI with unwavering confidence, surrendering their creative processes to its control. This total dependence risks eroding their individuality and threatens a future where their designs mirror AI-generated outputs. Balancing AI reliance with preserving unique creativity becomes the pivotal challenge in this evolving landscape.

  • Gradual abandonment of personal creative processes.
  • Increasing reliance on AI tools for various design tasks.
  • Decline in the use of personal ideas and problem-solving as AI takes precedence.
  • Work may increasingly resemble generic AI-generated designs, risking a decline in uniqueness.
Overconfident Users:

Those in this category comprehend AI but exhibit overconfidence in their ability to manage its impact. AI tools are used sporadically, and there is a prevailing belief that they have everything under control. The danger lies in the overestimation of their level of preparedness.
